International Baccalaureate 2nd Grade Commerce Unit!
In second grade we are beginning our Royal Oak Commerce unit. Students will be doing research, in groups, about how the Royal Oak economy is affected in a variety of areas. Group work will be divided into: Government, Business, Parks and Recreation, Schools, and Unique to Royal Oak.
The students created a poster that presents information about a particular aspect of a community (business, nature, facts, uniqueness, recreation, government, etc.) Students researched their questions on these aspects, worked together to assemble a poster showing their answers and presented this information to their peers. A rubric was developed to indicated students’ understanding, success in research and finding answers and presentation skills.
-What are the possible ways of assessing students’ prior knowledge and skills? What evidence will we look for?
-Students will write a personal narrative about the community they live in. Teachers will assess the aspects of a community included and how people live, work and spend money.
-What are the possible ways of assessing student learning in the context of the lines of inquiry? What evidence will we look for?
-Observation of students through the research process.
-Class discussions following readings, sharing as a whole group, sharing in work groups
-Journal response to – “What have you learned so far about Royal Oak?”
-Group journals to collect questions and ideas throughout the inquiry process.
Second Graders work on math problem-solving strategies using the "Math Workshop" model of instruction. Students are excited to apply their learning to real-world problems using this hands-on approach.
The Second Graders wrote Class Constitutions during their "Who We Are" unit: An inquiry into "Rights and Responsibilities".
